Marc is a huge fan of professional tennis and continues to plan his riding around matches. He was a competitive tennis player in his youth but once he got on the bike, he made the switch. Marc said, “I then met (teammates) Andy, Brad, and Lars and that was it.” Marc is one of the four original team members who founded the Boulder Masters Cycling Team in 1984.
Marc’s cycling accomplishments are extensive: He has won the Master's Tour de Var in France in 1986 in the 40-year-old category (the only American to have ever done so), placed 5th in the Austrian National Championships in 1985, 1st in a Points Tour of Styria Stage Race in Austria in 1985, 3rd at Road Race Nationals in 1986 in Indiana, a 5th at Hilly Crit Nationals in Park City in 1987, plus one other 5th at US Nationals. He was SM35+ Cyclocross State Champion in 1986 and also won around 115 races from 1982-1992 in Colorado, the USA, and Canada, including Tucson Bicycle Classic, Whiskey Creek Stage Race (Mammoth, California), Casper Classic, and Dead Dog Stage Race. He made the pro break at age 40 at the Tour de Moore (105 mile race). Marc said, “I've won just about every race held in Colorado, while I raced, at least once ... Now I just try to hang on Mike's [teammate Mike Newsome] wheel while he yells at me!”
Marc enjoys riding his Specialized S Works Roubaix Road Bike and says, “Well, I'm not racing now but riding and training with 'the blue men' keeps me sane … I think I'd likely rob banks if I weren't training hard.” Marc says he doesn't get bored training indoors; good music and TDF tapes helps him pass the time. He enjoys Vic’s soy Lattes, French fries, Merlot, Twizzlers, M&Ms, and is a strict vegetarian. He listed his superhero for a week as Gandhi. Is it any wonder, with the worldwide effort for animal rights that Marc continues to promulgate?
Marc particularly enjoys cool early morning summer rides with friends. His favorite local road ride is Jamestown to Ward to South St. Vrain. He rides his bike most days except Fridays, when he conducts his Roots and Shoots program on animal behavior at the local Boulder County jail. Known to wake very early in the morning to write, Marc is the author of 22 books.

Marc Bekoff is Professor Emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and is a Fellow of the Animal Behavior Society and a former Guggenheim Fellow. In 2000 he was awarded the Exemplar Award from the Animal Behavior Society for major long-term contributions to the field of animal behavior.
