I was raised under Montana's big sky which instilled a truly wondrous appreciation for the outdoors; my “heaven on earth” is when I’m surrounded by fresh air, a babbling brook, large Ponderosa Pine and the song of a happy bird…or a goofy friend.

With four older brothers, I quickly found my fast and slow twitch muscle groups and the advantages of each. I could run while eating or be eaten. With audacity, I chose the former and at age eight I began competing on the track with the Road Runners Club of America augmented by summer evenings playing a calculated game of kick-the-can. During Junior High, I mastered the 100 yard dash, 200 meter sprint, high jump, hurdles, long jump, and mile relay and accompanied my team to the State Championships every year throughout high school. During Junior High, I honed my track skills by joining the cross country team where I grew to appreciate a well manicured golf course and the thrill of winning a race longer than 1600 meters. My sophomore year I added another sport to my athletic CV: diving - the perfect scene for my public pool, self inflicted, 1-1/2 twist off the 3-meter board. In addition to running sports, I spent over a decade on the softball field playing left, 3rd base, or (fast) pitcher, and was invited to play on the All Star team for the duration of my career..and I still know how to hit a ball. Game anyone?

Trial running, competitive adult soccer, and skiing became my sports of choice during and immediately after college (MSU offers credit for ski class, so, why would you not sign up for a Friday afternoon class, pray tell?).

After college I was introduced to whitewater kayaking, mountain biking, cycling. In 2001, a month after moving to Colorado where road biking is much more than “Bridger” or “Hyalite”, I was introduced to one of the countries most talented master road racers, John Randy Gaffney. Randy took me under his very large wing and patiently showed me how to “road ride”; he educated me on the rules of the road, the numerous rides Boulder County has to offer including my all time favorite-Jamestown, and the thrill of a fast descent! … At this same time, I sought the advice of Andy Pruitt for an old knee injury who prescribed 30 days of riding which nurtured my love of the sport because it alleviated the need for a 5th knee surgery. Thanks Andy!

Road biking takes me home; it takes me into the mountains…to the birds, to the sound of the creek, to the trees, moving gently with nature-my heaven on earth. But mostly, it takes me out with my goofy friends to the places I love.
