Jonathon Montag

DOB: May 23, 1945
Years Racing: 38
Hometown: Cincinnati, Ohio
Occupation: Clinical Pharmacist

When Jonathon was asked what he would be doing if he weren’t racing a bike he said, “I would be a Pro Golfer; I won many tournaments in my youth, but as soon as I rode the bike I retired from golf at about age 21.” Jonathon has now been racing bikes for 38 years, the most years racing of any member of the Vic’s Espresso team. Within that time his achievements include: 2ND National Road Race Championship 1982; 3RD National Time Trial Championship 1981; 4TH National Road Race Championship 1981; Ohio State Road Race Champion twice; 1ST Mt. Evans Hill climb 2001; Colorado State Climbing Champion twice, 2001 & 2002; three other Top Ten National Events. He has 35 career wins with about 100 top 5 placings.

Jonathon is learning to speak Italian and delights the team with his Italian words and phrases on our rides and emails, helping us all feel like European cyclists. Next he said he wants to learn Opera (but not the singing part). After his favorite training ride from North Boulder to Estes Park and back, he will lean his Specialized Tarmac SL2 road bike (“sublime” he says) against the wall and take his Vic’s Doppio espresso in a Purple Fiesta Ware cup.

He also mentioned another training ride he enjoyed in Cincinnati, OH. He said it was “a super lovely 100 mile loop from Hyde Park to Cowan Lake and back.” Jonathon said, “When I was young, I rode the bike through everything, even in a blizzard in Ohio during 1976-1977 winter. That winter was tough and is the only reason I tried inside riding.” Now he says he hasn’t ridden indoors since 1976. He “could not take it,” he said.

Jonathon became interested in racing after a few years on the bike. He said, “I was riding 15,000 miles a year for 35 years and had accrued over 500,000 road miles; hence I became fit; racing was a beautiful, elegant spin-off.” When asked what his favorite test was at Boulder Center for Sports Medicine he said, “The end of the test. I feel quite okay when I'm done.” About half of our teammates, when asked which superhero they would be for a week, answer the question with the name of a Pro cyclist. Jonathon is one of those: his man – Alberto Contador.
