Vic’s Espresso/Peerless 2009 Rider Photo and Profile
Andy Pruitt
DOB: June 2, 1950
Years Racing: 30
Hometown: Henderson, Kentucky
Occupation: Sports Medicine
Moving from Iowa, where he received his education, Andy relocated to Boulder County 36 years ago. After realizing that training for Nordic ski racing was going to be too difficult, Andy was inspired to race (along with early teammate Lawrence Bosch) while watching the local 1978 Red Zinger Classic bicycle race. Andy’s top honors in Master’s racing include: World Cycling Champion (amputee) 1985 and 1987; National Cycling Champion (amputee) 1985 and 1988; European Cycling Champion (amputee) 1987; and Cat 2 USCF; and 6th in the 1988 Paralympics in Soul Korea.
Andy works hard as the Medical Product Design Consultant to Specialized Bicycles and Components, where he worked to develop their BG (Body Geometry) S-WORKS road shoe and BG saddles. Andy also works hard at the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine (BCSM) where he jokes that his favorite performance tests are those that are “all cash pay.” Now is where we should mention that Andy is Founder of BCSM.
Off the bike Andy spends much of his time at BCSM. He is well-known as an expert in bike fitting and sports medicine, working with world-class athletes from around the world and often traveling to consult with leading Pro teams including Team SaxoBank, Quick Step and others.
Andy was Chief Medical Officer USAC from 1992-96, and Chief Medical Officer for all Cycling Venues at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, GA. In 2006 Andy Pruitt authored an excellent medical guide for cyclists, co-authored by teammate Fred Matheny. Andy and Fred have been friends since the 1970’s when Andy was trainer for the CU Football Team.
Andy is one of the four founding members of the Boulder Masters Cycling Team. He somehow manages to squeeze in time to ride and race with the team in Colorado. If Andy was not racing bikes he would likely be working too much and “be fat,” he said. Andy is happy riding anywhere in the area except for the Apple Valley every day, and enjoys his favorite drink at Vic’s Espresso – a hot cocoa.
